Deer hunting has changed drastically for me over the last few years. For the better part of 20 years of hunting, I have hunted alone. Sure, I hunted with my Dad and Grandfather a lot when I was younger and when I got older I hunted with some buddies, but the majority of my hunting time was spent hunting alone. Of course, hunting alone had its benefits and honestly I loved hunting solo. When Cameron was old enough to start going with me, I instantly loved having the best hunting partner in the world by my side. This season, I have two great hunting buddies because Carter has started to tag along too!
Cameron has enjoyed several seasons sitting in a deer stand with me. Carter has insisted that he is now part of our crew. He loves going and to be honest he does a pretty good job for a 3 year old. It is a joy to have them both in the stand. I get a thrill out of watching them discover new sounds in the woods. To me an alert squirrel barking is a nuisance but to Cameron and Carter it is a new experience full of wonder and excitement.
We have mainly hunted out of our large box stands but I did put together a hay bale blind for a cold evening hunt. The blind was nice and cozy and consisted of about 10 square bales of hay. The boys loved it since it was a change of scenery but it kept the strong winds off of us which allowed us to be much more comfortable during the hunt.
To keep the boys entertained I allow them to bring food, drinks, and their tablets. I also let them use some calls from time to time. I have several in my pack for them to choose from but I try to limit the usage of these calls. They enjoy using “The Can” and the rattling antlers the best. We have only seen a handful of deer with all three of us hunting. I expected it to be this way hunting with two boys but they don’t seem to mind at all. As they get older and have the ability to sit in a stand without moving or talking as much that will change. It is a real blessing to be able to hunt with my boys. They love to hunt and I have found the best hunting partners a Dad could have!
